SKINNY DOES NOT EQUAL HEALTHY

This photo is from early 2021 - more than 5 years ago, + when I was over 10kg lighter than I am now. On the outside, I was at my “goal weight.” I thought I was doing everything right. I ate well (or so I believed), I trained, + I was the lightest I’d been as an adult with two kids.

But on the inside? I was a mess.

Elevated autoantibodies + inflammation. High cortisol. Low iron. Low thyroid function. Gut dysbiosis. Estrogen dominance. Anxiety + panic attacks.

That period was the beginning of my deep dive into learning, unlearning, + rebuilding my health from the inside out.

If you’re constantly battling the scales or chasing a number you think will finally make you feel “enough,” I want to gently offer this:

Focus on how you feel, not just how you look. Focus on one supportive change at a time. Focus on the non‑scale victories - energy, mood, digestion, strength, steadiness, better sleep, balanced hormones, or improved health markers like blood pressure, cholesterol, or whatever is relevant to you.

Because from personal experience: skinny does not equal healthy. And health is so much more than a number on the scales.

There can be so much pressure to choose a “forever path” early on.

I reminded my teenage daughter recently that she doesn’t need to have it all mapped out at her age.

I didn’t figure out my own direction until my 40s 🤷‍♀️

And honestly? A lot of women don’t.

We shift. We learn. We begin again.

☆ GF CHEESEBURGER MACARONI ☆ My toxic trait? I treat every recipe like a loose suggestion. More than 20 changes later, and it's now a family favourite 💖

I grated in butternut pumpkin, carrot, zucchini, then stirred through baby spinach. Also contains beef, brown onion, fresh garlic, bone broth, organic gherkins plus spring onions (and the homemade sauce + cheese). Teenager approved and seriously delicious 😋

Don't be afraid to play around with recipes. The best dishes are rarely the ones you follow perfectly 🤍

When gastro hits, hydration becomes the priority, and simple electrolytes are everything.

Timing matters too. Getting electrolytes in early can make a huge difference.

My son’s been knocked flat this week, but thankfully Nurse Lexie has been on full‑time duty 🐕💖

And if you ever need a gentle, homemade electrolyte drink, the coconut‑water version on the last slide is my go‑to. It's simple, soothing, easy on sensitive tummies, + actually drinkable when nothing else feels like it will sit.

Save this for the next time gastro visits your house (which hopefully isn't soon. It's not a whole lot of fun 😜).

A gut‑supportive lunch that took minutes: GF sourdough (activated charcoal, turmeric + black pepper), avocado, soft scrambled eggs cooked in a splash of extra-virgin olive oil, and organic brown lentils. (Topped with the Spicy Bagel seasoning from Mingle Seasoning, because it’s additive-free and seriously delicious!)

Protein, healthy fats, dietary fibre, various vitamins + minerals, and slow‑release carbs - to keep blood sugar steady and digestion calm.

It’s wild how easily we convince ourselves that the things that genuinely support our health are the things we “don’t have time for” or “can’t afford.” Yet the same amount of time or money slips through our fingers without a second thought when it’s going toward convenience, distraction, or short‑term comfort.

We live in a world that makes the unhelpful choices the easiest ones - the ones that cost us nothing in the moment, but so much over time. And our bodies + minds absolutely feel that difference.

A 30‑minute walk. A plate of real food. An early night. A moment of stillness.

These aren’t luxuries - they’re the foundations that make everything else in life feel lighter, and the very things that support us in feeling + functioning at our best.

I’ve been feeling a little out of balance recently - that quiet “something’s not right” whisper we often ignore. Instead of guessing, I went straight to the source: my labs.

I ordered my tests last night + had my bloods taken this morning (I’m genuinely curious to see what they show!). Functional blood testing helps me understand what’s shifting beneath the surface - hormones, nutrients, inflammation, thyroid - all the things that influence how we feel day to day.

It’s the same approach I use with clients: targeted testing, clear interpretation, + a plan designed specifically for you, so you can feel like yourself again. Hopefully I will soon, too 🤍

A good cob loaf was something I really missed after going gluten-free, and sadly, I found the store-bought alternatives were filled with modified ingredients, additives + preservatives. Now, I make my own using my sourdough loaves (the above is a turmeric + black pepper GF sourdough). And they're a hit with the whole family!

Changing your diet doesn't always have to mean going without the foods you love - sometimes it just means getting a little creative 😉

~ RECIPE TIME! ~

For some reason, I’ve been asked for this recipe a lot lately. You can change it up however you’d like (I did that very thing from a recipe I randomly found years ago), but this is how I make mine. And if you’re vegan? Swap for flax eggs instead 😊

INGREDIENTS FOR LOADED BANANA BREAD:

- 3 ripe bananas - mashed
- ¾ cup fresh or frozen blueberries (if frozen, drain off extra liquid)
- The pulp from 1-2 fresh passionfruit
- 1 TBSP melted coconut oil
- 2 TBSP maple syrup
- 3 eggs

- 1 cup almond meal
- ¾ cup hazelnut meal
- 1 tsp bicarb soda
- Pinch of sea salt

OPTIONAL add-ins –

- 2-3 TBSP sprouted brown rice protein powder, or unflavoured protein powder of choice

- ¼ cup DF chocolate chips (I use Honest to Goodness, Organic Dark Chocolate Drops IF I add these)

- ¼ cup mixed activate nuts – either mixed through, or chopped and sprinkled over the top. Your choice.

- ¼ cup shredded coconut – either mixed through, or chopped and sprinkled over the top. Your choice.

DIRECTIONS:

My oven runs hot – so I usually bake at around 170C. Preheat your oven, and grease/line a loaf tin to your preference (I use coconut oil for this one).

Add all of the wet ingredients to a bowl and mix well.

Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients and stir until combined (you want a thick mixture. If it’s too wet or thin – depending on add-ins – then add a TBSP or two more of almond or hazelnut meal).

Spread the mixture into your loaf tin, and if adding mixed nuts or shredded coconut on top, do so now.

Place in the oven and bake until a skewer comes out clean. Depending on what add-ins I use on the day, that can be anywhere from 40-55 mins.

Allow to cool in the tin, then remove and either slice and enjoy, or if you want to take it to the next level, I cut in half from end to end, and fill with a whipped coconut cream mixture… If anyone wants the recipe for that, just let me know 😉 Enjoy!

I started learning how to make GF sourdough in 2025 (I'd never made any type of sourdough prior to that).

I'm having more fun scoring and experimenting with flavours, than anything else! I have no idea if the inside is how it's meant to look, but the taste is lovely and we all enjoy it, so that's good enough for me 😊
